The CBR Gals Network presents our eighth book club event in partnership with Queenies Kingston. Gals, Becoming is a feminist book club that provides a safe space for gals to grow, learn, share ideas and become fuller versions of themselves. Join us over nibbles and drinks for thoughtful conversation, introspection and laughs with some like-minded gals.
To kick off Gals, Becoming for 2022, we will be reading a collection of deeply insightful and powerful essays by Chelsea Watego as she examines the ongoing and daily racism faced by First Nations peoples in so-called Australia. Rather than offer yet another account of ‘the Aboriginal problem’, she theorises a strategy for living in a social world that has only ever imagined Indigenous peoples as destined to die out.
Drawing on her own experiences and observations of the operations of the colony, she exposes the lies that settlers tell about Indigenous people. In refusing such stories, Chelsea tells her own- fierce, personal, sometimes funny, sometimes anguished. She speaks not of fighting back but of standing her ground against colonialism in academia, in court, and in the media. It’s a stance that takes its toll on relationships, career prospects, and even the body.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? All ages are welcome to attend. Our age ranges typically from 19 – 65. Must be 18+ to drink alcoholic beverages.
What are the conditions of the “Gals, Becoming” Book Club?
Membership and is free, but each event costs $10 to cover the cost of nibbles. Additionally, becoming a member is a monthly commitment. To become a member, attendees must:
- Attend three consecutive monthly meetings, to be held on the last Thursday of each month at a central location.
- Note: After becoming a member, attendance is required at two of every three meetings. We think it’s important for gals to consistently attend meetings in order to form close relationships with other members.
- Come to each meeting well-versed in the chosen book. Gals can “read” the book in whatever format you want, just come ready to chat about the book.
What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? There is plenty of parking but we recommend rideshare or carpool!
