The CBR Gals Network presents the Gals Evolving bookclub at Queenies KingstonGals Evolving is a feminist book club that provides a safe space for gals to grow, learn, share ideas and become fuller versions of themselves. Join us over nibbles and drinks for thoughtful conversation, introspection and laughs with some like-minded gals. The Burrow by Melanie Cheng - 9781922790941

This month, the book choice is The Burrow by Melanie Cheng.

Content warnings: The Burrow includes content warnings for themes of grief, trauma, and loss, particularly the accidental death of a young child. The novel also contains depictions of family estrangement, guilt, and emotional stagnation. It explores emotionally intense and at times unsettling experiences related to familial relationships, personal healing, and the fragility of life, which may be distressing for some readers.

The Burrow by Melanie Cheng is a tender, quietly powerful novel about grief, healing, and the messy love that holds families together—even when no one knows how to talk about what really matters. Set in lockdown-era Melbourne, the story follows the Lee family as they navigate the long shadow of a tragedy: the accidental death of baby Ruby years earlier. With the unexpected arrival of a pet rabbit and old wounds bubbling to the surface, each family member is forced to confront their silence, guilt, and longing for connection. At its heart, this book is about the weight of unspoken pain, the slow work of forgiveness, and the quiet strength it takes to start over—even when you’re not sure you can.

The cost of this event covers food. Drinks will be available for purchase.

Join us for our Gals Evolving bookclub at Queenies Kingston from 6 to 8:00 PM.

About this Event

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? All ages are welcome to attend. Our age ranges typically from 19 – 65. Must be 18+ to drink alcoholic beverages.

What are the conditions of the Gals Evolving Book Club?

Membership and attendance is free, but each event costs $15 to cover the cost of nibbles. Additionally, becoming a member is a monthly commitment. To become a member, attendees must:

  • Attend three consecutive monthly meetings, to be held on the last Thursday of each month at a central location.
    • Note: After becoming a member, attendance is required at two of every three meetings. We think it’s important for gals to consistently attend meetings in order to form close relationships with other members.
  • Come to each meeting well-versed in the chosen book. Gals can “read” the book in whatever format you want, just come ready to chat about the book.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? There is plenty of parking but we recommend rideshare or carpool!

How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Please e-mail us at enquiries@cbrgals.com.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? Nope!

What is your refund/RSVP policy? Please review our Refund Policy.
